The Tarkington ISD Board of Trustees has named Dr. Randal O’Brien as interim superintendent, effective July 1, 2026.

According to a statement from Tarkington ISD, Dr. O’Brien will provide leadership and support for district operations while the Board conducts the process to select the district’s next superintendent.

“Our priority is to ensure stability for our students, staff, families, and community during this time of transition,” said Board President Lane Gulledge. “Dr. O’Brien brings a wealth of experience, steady leadership, and a deep understanding of public education. We believe his experience and leadership will be a tremendous asset to Tarkington ISD as we move forward.”

Dr. O’Brien is an experienced superintendent with more than 30 years in public education, half of which has been as a superintendent of schools. He is recognized for his steady leadership, commitment to academic improvement, employee development, organizational stability, and strong community engagement. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated the ability to lead both large, diverse school systems and small rural districts with a continued focus on student achievement and community partnership.

When asked about his guiding principles, Dr. O’Brien shared that his faith in God and lessons learned early in life continue to shape his leadership. He believes in seeking to leave the world a little better than he found it and credits his teachers and coaches with instilling in him the belief that great things can be accomplished through hard work, dedication, and a willingness to do what it takes.

“It’s not often you have an opportunity to give back to a community that helped forge you during your leadership journey, and that is exactly how I view the Tarkington Prairie community,” said Dr. O’Brien. “I am grateful for the opportunity to step in and help guide the school district that afforded me my first principalship at Tarkington Middle School.”

Dr. O’Brien also emphasized his belief in the power of education and the importance of serving students, staff, and families.

“I believe education is the key that opens the door of opportunity, and we have an obligation to open as many doors as we can for the children and community we serve,” said Dr. O’Brien. “Education is a people business, and I just happen to love people. As a husband, father, and grandfather, I am invested in our future. As a cancer survivor, I have also learned that every day and every moment of engagement is an opportunity to make a positive difference in someone’s life, child and adult alike.”

The Board of Trustees looks forward to working with Dr. O’Brien during this transition and remains committed to keeping the Tarkington ISD community informed throughout the superintendent search process.
