Additional details have been released regarding the criminal case against former Liberty Police Officer Jason Anthony Grindstaff, 45, of Willis, who turned himself in Friday after a Liberty County grand jury returned two indictments against him.
According to the indictments, Grindstaff has been charged with Official Oppression and Indecent Assault in connection with allegations involving a complainant.
The Official Oppression indictment alleges that on or about Nov. 30, 2025, Grindstaff intentionally subjected the complainant to sexual harassment by masturbating and ejaculating in the complainant’s presence while acting under color of his office as a Liberty police officer and field training officer. The indictment further alleges the conduct was unwelcome and that the complainant’s submission was expressly or implicitly made a condition of exercising or enjoying a right or privilege.
The second indictment charges Grindstaff with Indecent Assault. Prosecutors allege he intentionally exposed the complainant’s buttocks without the complainant’s consent and with the intent to arouse or gratify his sexual desire.
The charges stem from an investigation initiated by the Texas Rangers after Liberty Police Chief Richard Ashe was notified of a complaint involving Grindstaff on Dec. 3, 2025, according to a July 3 press release issued by the City of Liberty.
The City said the Texas Rangers interviewed Grindstaff that same day, after which he was sent home pending further review. He was placed on administrative leave Dec. 4, 2025, and resigned from the Liberty Police Department on Feb. 27, 2026, while still on administrative leave.
The City of Liberty previously stated that the Liberty Police Department fully cooperated with the Texas Rangers by providing records, documents and other requested materials throughout the investigation.
Grindstaff surrendered to authorities Friday morning following the indictments. He remains in the Liberty County Jail without bond.
