With the heaviest of hearts, we announce the sudden unexpected passing of Justin Tanner Guess, 41, of Porter, Texas, who went home to heaven on July 19, 2026.
Born in Houston, Texas on July 18, 1985, to Mother Shela and Father Mark, Justin lived a life marked by kindness, laughter, and an unwavering love for God and his family. From an early age, he demonstrated dedication to marital arts, earning his black belt and even serving selflessly as a teacher and mentor to those younger than him in the program.
Throughout his adult life, Justin’s greatest passion was his faith in God. He read his Bible daily, and his Facebook bio simply proclaimed, “God is Great,” a reflection of the conviction that guided his life. Even through life’s many challenges, trials, and tribulations, Justin spoke openly of his trust in God’s goodness. His family finds great comfort in knowing that his heart was firmly rooted in his relationship with the Lord. One of the most meaningful milestones in Justin’s life was his baptism on July 15, 2018, a public expression of his faith.
Justin found great joy in the simple things in life, especially time spent outdoors. An avid fisherman, he developed a lifelong love of fishing through the countless trips he shared with his father while growing up. Being near the water brought him peace, and whenever he had a day off, he could often be found casting a line or taking meticulous care of his car, a hobby he thoroughly enjoyed.
Those who knew Justin best also knew the gentleness of his heart. He had compassion for animals of every kind and treated every living creature with kindness and care. His caring nature and appreciation for God’s creation reflected his character.
Justin is preceded in death by his grandparents Lea Ellen Peterson, Jimmy Cockrell, and Robin and Janie Guess.
Justin will be forever loved and deeply missed by those that survive him, including his Mother, Shela Jarnagin; Father, John Mark Guess; Brother, Blake Peeples (wife, Tesha); Sisters, Jennifer Lea Consford (husband, Jonathan) and Barbara Jo Jarnagin; Nephews, Elijah Peeples, Taylor Consford, and Bryan Jarnagin; Niece, Victoria Leavelle; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family. Justin shared an especially close bond with his mother Shela, who was by his side his entire life, and his big brother Blake, whom he spoke of with love and admiration. Justin’s relationships with his family – mother, brother, sister, father, and others – were a source of strength and comfort to him.
Justin’s life will be honored at a public memorial service open to all of Justin’s family and friends at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home (303 E. Crockett St., Cleveland, TX 77327), on August 1, 2026. Guests are welcome to arrive after 8 a.m. for visitation with the family prior to the start of service at 10 a.m. sharp. The service will be followed by a grave-side memorial just a short distance away at the Memorial Rest Gardens (12901 FM-2025, Cleveland, TX 77328) where Justin will be laid to rest.
Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Justin are invited to attend and share their favorite memories. Additionally, flowers or other dedications may be sent to Pace-Stancil in Justin’s honor.
Remember Jesus’ words in Chapter 10 in the book of John: I am the Good Shepherd; I know my own and my own know me. [The shepherd] calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.
With hearts full of hope, we take comfort in knowing that Jesus has called Justin by name and welcomed him into His eternal presence. We have no doubt that Justin now rests safely with the Good Shepherd, who lovingly watches over His own.
