A 19-year-old Spring man was killed Sunday afternoon, Aug. 2, around 5:23 p.m., after the pickup truck he was driving crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another pickup towing a travel trailer on SH 99 (Grand Parkway) in Liberty County.
According to Sgt. Rob Willoughby, supervisor for the Liberty County office of the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2025 Chevrolet Colorado pickup was traveling northbound on SH 99 just north of FM 686 when, for an unknown reason, it swerved into the southbound lane and struck a 2016 Ford F-250 that was pulling a 2026 Airstream travel trailer.
The driver of the Chevrolet, the 19-year-old Spring man, died upon impact when a piece of the Airstream trailer pierced the windshield and struck the driver in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Ralph Fuller, who ordered an autopsy.
The decedent’s mother, age 52, of Spring, was a front-seat passenger in the pickup. An 11-year-old boy, presumed to be the crash victim’s younger brother, was also riding in the back seat. Both survivors were transported to HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.
The driver of the Ford, Terry Burton, 66, of Baytown, and his passenger, Darla Burton, 61, of Baytown, were not seriously injured. Two boys, ages 8 and 5, who were also traveling in the vehicle, were likewise uninjured.
Trooper Jon Ramseur led the crash investigation. He was assisted at the scene by Trooper Grant Nickel, Sgt. Willoughby and Trooper Thomas Thurston, who used a drone as part of the District’s crash team response. Dayton VFD and Liberty County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The names of the deceased man and his family members are being withheld at this time to give his family more time for notifications.
