Michael Weldon (Mike) Smith, of Liberty, passed away on July 29, 2026. He was born Dec. 1, 1951, to Dr. James Donald Smith and Norma Marie Finley Smith.
Mike was something of a local legend in Liberty (and arguably across Texas and every rig he ever went to), he knew everybody- and everybody knew him. He loved everybody, and everybody loved him. If you had the pleasure of his company, you’d leave crying from belly laughs, parting with a huge hug and a kiss on the cheek for the ladies. He was always a gentleman — kind, sweet and endearing.
He loved Liberty and cared deeply for those in his community, often delivering his homemade cobblers about town to those he felt needed them. Lord, he loved the telephone. He spent a lifetime on the roads across West Texas and beyond – going from rig to rig- and always on the phone with someone! “Checking in on ya!” he’d say. He was a great cheerleader for everyone who knew him – with a hell of a memory!
He is survived by his son Michael Donald Smith and wife Lizzy, grandchildren Mitchell and Harper Smith; brothers James Donald (Jimmy) Smith and wife Helena, and Marc Randall (Randy) Smith and wife Cathil; nieces Stacy Smith and Kristen Sherman; nephew Wyatt James Smith; and long-time companion, Suzanne Haberle.

What a good guy! Growing up in Oak Forest in the 1960’s where lots of kids had a great time. A lot of good families who all knew each other. Mearns lot and the Carter’s basketball cul de sac, where many a sporting event took place. Holiday’s decorations, very safe place. A different world we were all fortunate to be a part of. Mike also loved his Grant Teaff Baylor Bears and Liberty Panthers(1970) Mike and his cousin Scooter Finley, lol’s!
