The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers are impersonating sheriff’s office personnel and demanding money.
According to Capt. John Bennett, spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, residents have reported receiving calls from people claiming to be members of the sheriff’s office, including deputies or administrative personnel.
In some cases, the scammers claim there is a warrant for the person’s arrest and attempt to convince the person to send money to resolve the matter.
Bennett said the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office will not call residents and demand financial payments.
“At no point is the LCSO going to ask anyone to send in money over the phone,” Bennett said.
Some of the calls appear to be coming from local telephone numbers, Bennett added. However, residents should not assume a call is legitimate simply because the number appears to be local.
Bennett said sheriff’s office personnel make in-person contact with individuals regarding these types of matters and do not call demanding payment over the telephone.
Anyone who receives one of these calls should not provide personal or financial information or send money. Residents can simply hang up on the caller.
