Motorists in Liberty County and across Southeast Texas can expect construction activity, lane closures and maintenance work during the week starting Aug. 24 as the Texas Department of Transportation continues projects throughout its Beaumont District.
TxDOT cautions that work schedules are subject to change because of weather, equipment problems or other unforeseen circumstances. Motorists are urged to slow down and pay attention in work zones.
Liberty County
Several projects are active in Liberty County, including major work on US 90 in Dayton and paving projects along US 59 and SH 105.
At the intersection of SH 105 and Charles Barker Road in Cleveland, a traffic signal crew is scheduled to work during the week, with lane closures expected. Maintenance crews also will perform level-up operations on FM 787 from SH 146 to the county line and along FM 160 from SH 146 to two miles east.
On US 90 in Dayton, work continues on the $30 million overpass being constructed over the Union Pacific Railroad just east of SH 146.
The contractor, SER Construction Partners LLC, is scheduled to place beams Friday night. The work will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and will require eastbound lane closures. Crews also will continue work on retaining walls and bridge caps.
The overpass project is expected to be completed in early 2028.
Another US 90 project stretches from the Trinity River bridge east in Liberty to approximately 0.14 miles west of SH 146 North. The $4.1 million project includes milling existing asphalt, base repairs, cleaning and sealing joints, a seal coat and asphalt overlay.
Crews are waiting for repaired joints to cure and will perform curb repairs in the meantime. Once the curing process is complete, contractors are expected to apply the seal coat followed by the asphalt overlay. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2026.
On the US 59 northbound frontage road from Loop 573 South to Dudley Street in Cleveland, crews are completing work associated with an $862,000 base repair and asphalt overlay project. Remaining signs have been ordered, and the contractor is scheduled to complete the mow strip. Completion is anticipated this fall.
A separate $1 million project is underway on the northbound and southbound US 59 frontage roads at FM 2025 in Cleveland. Joint sealing and backfilling are scheduled for the week, with alternating lane closures planned from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24. The project includes base repairs, joint sealing, asphalt overlay and striping and is expected to be completed this fall.
Work also continues on the $2.8 million SH 105 overlay project from US 59 east to SH 321 in Cleveland. Contractors are performing asphalt operations, and motorists should expect one lane to be closed with flaggers directing traffic between SH 321 and the US 59 connector from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. during striping operations. The project is expected to be completed this fall.
Liberty County also has two bridge replacement locations included in a $5.7 million project shared with Chambers County. On FM 563 at FM 770, crews will continue placing embankment for the bridge approach. On CR 2307, also known as Miller Road, at Gaylor Creek, crews are scheduled to work on bridge deck placement. The overall project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
A separate $2.4 million pavement marking and signage project includes work at various locations along US 59, SH 321, SH 105, FM 2518 and FM 1725 in Liberty County, along with locations in Chambers County. Crews have been working on edge-line striping beginning in the Winnie area and moving west. The project is scheduled for completion in early 2027.
Here is a closer look at projects in neighboring counties:
Chambers County
Maintenance crews in Chambers County will conduct herbicide operations along I-10 from Winnie to the Harris County line. Crews also will replace signs and repair roadway edges along FM 3180 and FM 1942.
At I-10 and SH 146, work continues on a $4.4 million project to add dual left-turn lanes on SH 146. Crews will finish setting barriers and perform saw-cutting operations. The project includes daytime and nighttime work and is expected to be completed in fall 2027.
On the I-10 north frontage road from FM 1406 east to approximately 0.3 miles east of FM 1406, contractors will perform driveway and mow-strip work as part of an $823,000 base repair and asphalt overlay project. Completion is anticipated this fall.
A $311,000 project on FM 565 near SH 99 and in the Mont Belvieu-Baytown area also continues. The project includes LED stop signs, advanced LED warning signs and LED chevrons. Crews will be trenching and placing conduit.
At North Bay Avenue over the Lone Star Canal, work continues as part of the bridge replacement project shared with Liberty County. The project also includes sidewalk work along Miller Street and North Bay Avenue and a pedestrian bridge over the Lone Star Canal. Crews have placed some sidewalks along SH 65, Miller Street and side roads.
Hardin County
A traffic signal crew will work at the intersection of SH 327 and Business 96, where lane closures are expected. Maintenance crews also will perform ditch work and brush removal along SH 326 near Laird Road.
Contractors are scheduled to mobilize Aug. 24 for the $8.5 million US 96 bridge project at the BNSF railroad. Work will include preparations for paint remediation at US 96 and US 190 bridge locations. Motorists should be prepared to stop and use caution through the work zone. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2027.
On SH 326 between US 69 and FM 1293, seal-coat and asphalt paving operations have been completed on a $1.5 million roadway restoration project. Striping for the final traffic configuration is scheduled to begin during the week on the eastbound and westbound main lanes and turn lanes. Completion is expected late this year.
A $4.1 million bridge replacement project involving locations in Chambers, Hardin and Tyler counties is nearing completion. Major construction has been finished, with crews scheduled to paint bridge structure numbers and add delineators to bridge rails.
Jefferson County
Debris removal crews will work along I-10 from the Orange County line to the Chambers County line, along US 69 from Sulphur Plant Road to I-10 and along SH 73 from the Chambers County line to the Veterans Memorial Bridge.
On US 90 between I-10 and Langham Road, contractors are finishing remaining work, including object markers and signs, on a $5.1 million bridge maintenance project expected to wrap up in October.
At US 69 and SH 73, work continues on the $81.5 million turbine interchange project. Crews are working on the direct connector from southbound US 69 to eastbound SH 73 and paving eastbound SH 73 from Canal A to Ninth Avenue. Completion is anticipated in fall 2027.
The $533.2 million I-10 Eastex interchange widening and reconstruction project also continues between the Hollywood Overpass and Seventh Street. Crews will work on underground drainage along the eastbound and westbound frontage roads, bridge elements, concrete pilings, pavement and driveways. Full-depth concrete repairs also will be conducted on the I-10 main lanes during nighttime operations.
The project will reconstruct the northern I-10/US 69 interchange and widen I-10 from four lanes to six. Completion is anticipated in spring 2031.
Final cleanup is underway on the $7.7 million SH 124 bridge replacement at Taylors Bayou, which is expected to be completed in September.
Work also continues on the $315.4 million I-10 Cardinal interchange reconstruction project from CR 131, or Walden Road, to US 90. Crews will work on bridge columns, footings and caps, drilled shafts in Hillebrandt Bayou, roadway base, concrete pavement and underground drainage. The project is expected to continue through spring 2031.
Two additional I-10 widening projects are underway. A $119.9 million project extends from approximately 0.64 miles west of Hamshire Road to FM 365. Crews will work on embankment, retaining wall panels, riprap and guard fence.
Another $136.5 million project extends from FM 365 to Walden Road. Crews continue removing concrete near Boyt Road, straightening barriers on westbound I-10 between Smith and Boyt roads during nightly closures and preparing for drainage work at Bayou Din. Both widening projects are expected to be completed in spring 2028.
On US 90, or College Street, a $2.6 million pedestrian improvement project continues. Crews will perform concrete work for curbs, driveways and sidewalks along Langham Drive. The project, which includes sidewalks, pedestrian curb ramps and traffic signals, is expected to continue through March 2028.
Other Jefferson County projects include port wayfinding signs, replacement of large highway signs, landscaping improvements, traffic signal upgrades along Dowlen Road, safety improvements along Ninth Avenue and shoulder and drainage improvements on FM 365.
