The Hull-Daisetta Golden Oldies organization is looking to the community to help pave the way — quite literally — for future generations of Bobcats.
The organization’s “Pathway to the Future” Project, which features engraved pavers at the entrance to the Hull-Daisetta High School gym, serves as the Golden Oldies’ primary fundraising effort for scholarships awarded to Hull-Daisetta students.
Charles Kaemmerling, one of the organizers of the Golden Oldies, said the project is especially important as the organization prepares to significantly increase its scholarship commitment next year.
The Golden Oldies Board recently voted to award five $5,000 scholarships next year, for a total of $25,000. That represents a $10,000 increase over the amount awarded this year.
While the organization has benefited from strong investment management, Kaemmerling said continued growth of the scholarship program depends upon contributions from supporters.
The Golden Oldies works to keep ticket prices for its annual gathering at approximately the break-even point rather than relying on the event itself as a major fundraiser. Instead, the Pathway to the Future Project helps generate money that can be invested in future Bobcats through scholarships.
Those who have visited the front entrance of the high school gym may already have noticed the engraved pavers installed there. The pavers can be purchased to memorialize, honor or recognize former students, families, organizations or special moments in Hull-Daisetta history.
In addition to preserving names and memories connected to the school and community, each purchase helps support the Golden Oldies Scholarship Foundation.
Four sizes are available. A 4-by-8-inch brick, which allows three lines of engraving with 14 spaces per line, is $125. A 12-by-12-inch paver is $300; a 24-by-24-inch paver is $550; and a 48-by-48-inch paver is $1,500.
Kaemmerling said the project gives former Bobcats, families and other supporters an opportunity to leave something lasting at the school while helping students who will follow them.
