Nancy Margaret Slack, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, was born on Jan. 27, 1947, in Cameron, Texas. She passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2026, in Cleveland, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, determination, and cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
Nancy was a remarkably creative woman who passed her imagination and talents on to her children and grandchildren. She found joy in making things special and memorable for her family. There are fond memories of when she would take her children to the Humble Public Pool for swimming lessons and also make sure they had plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. Nancy’s creativity came to life in many ways. When her children were little, she would make costumes for them out of pillowcases, transforming them into Batman, Robin, and Batgirl. These simple creations became treasured childhood memories and ignited the creative fire in their minds.
Nancy’s creativity also became an important part of her career. She was a talented cake decorator and an independent wedding caterer who took great pride in her work. She eventually managed the Brookshire Brothers bakery in Cleveland, Texas. Through her dedication, hard work, and business sense, Nancy turned a bakery that had been operating at a loss into a profitable business. Brookshire Brothers recognized her success and went on to use her business model throughout the state.
Nancy had a love for beautiful things and enjoyed the little touches that made life special. Teal was her favorite color, and she also loved leopard print. She enjoyed music, especially the songs of Enya and Elvis, as well as “Hallelujah.” Her favorite flowers were magnolias and pink roses. Nancy loved the Lord and was grateful for what she was given. Nancy loved her family. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, friends, and her beloved cat, Beastie, affectionately known as Snuggles.
Nancy is survived by her children, Dan Slack and his wife, Valarie; Robert Slack; and Stacy Slack; grandchildren, Tara Poncho; Travis Boone and his wife, Chloe; Michael Ackerman and his wife, Anitra; Dalton Slack and his wife, Christian; and Brittany Martin and her husband, Austin; and great-grandchildren, Emma, Braylan, Avalee, Destan, Mila, Colsyn, Navy, Kennedy, Eleanor, Kristen, Trent, and Ethan.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jerry Lee Slack; her parents, Tony Ulicnik and Margaret Doughty Ulicnik; brothers, Jerry Wayne Ulicnik, Edward Ulicnik, Tommy Ulicnik, and Mike Ulicnik; and sisters, Dottie Kelly, Betty Pounds, and Marion Powers.
Her passing marks the end of a family generation, but the love, lessons, creativity, strength, and memories she shared with those around her will continue through all the generations she leaves behind.
Nancy’s life was filled with creativity, hard work, family, music, laughter, and love. She leaves behind not only the people who loved her, but also the many memories she created along the way. She will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
A memorial service in honor of Nancy’s legacy will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, 2026, located at Neal Funeral Home, 200 S. Washington Ave., Cleveland, Texas 77327. Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m., with Nancy’s memorial service beginning at 7:00 PM.
