Cleveland ISD’s RBB Band makes history with second consecutive state championship

For the second year in a row, the Cleveland High School Royal Braves Band has brought home a state championship, earning the title of UIL State Military Marching Band Champion.

Under the direction of Band Director Shaka Hawkins, the Royal Braves Band successfully defended its state title, adding another championship to the school’s growing list of accomplishments.

The back-to-back victories reflect countless hours of rehearsals, preparation and dedication from students who balanced the demands of marching band with their academic responsibilities.

Cleveland ISD officials said the achievement is especially meaningful because it demonstrates that students from smaller communities can compete successfully against programs from across Texas.

“This is an incredible moment for our students, our schools, and the entire Cleveland community,” said Cleveland ISD Superintendent Dr. Glenn Barnes. “Winning a state championship is difficult. Returning the following year with the expectations that come with being the defending champion and winning again is exceptional. Our students showed that they were ready for the challenge, and they represented Cleveland with tremendous pride.”

The Royal Braves Band’s latest victory also highlights the support students receive from their directors, families and the Cleveland community. District officials credited that combination of hard work and encouragement with helping the band maintain its championship standard.

“The back-to-back championship is also a powerful story about opportunity in public education. Students do not have to come from the largest communities or the largest school systems to achieve at the highest level. The Royal Braves Band stepped onto the state stage carrying the name of Cleveland ISD across their uniforms and demonstrated that talent, hard work, discipline, and determination can compete anywhere,” according to a statement from the District.
