John Michael Bell

John Michael Bell, affectionately known as “Bootsie,” 76, of Sour Lake, Texas, passed away peacefully on Nov. 2, 2026, in Beaumont, Texas. He was born on Feb. 6, 1950, in Memphis, Tennessee.

John was a hardworking, strong-willed man who believed in working hard, standing his ground, and taking care of the people he loved. Above all else, his family meant the world to him. He loved them deeply and took pride in the life he built and the memories they shared.

John dedicated 20 years of his life to Sun Oil Company before moving on to a career as a welder and electrician. He was a man who could work with his hands and wasn’t afraid of a hard day’s work. There wasn’t much he couldn’t figure out or fix.

When he wasn’t working, John enjoyed the things that made him happiest. He was an excellent cook who could make just about anything and always knew his way around the kitchen. He loved gardening, growing all kinds of plants, and canning his own pickles. He enjoyed riding around on his lawnmower, spending time outdoors, hunting, and saltwater fishing. Whether he was working in the garden, cooking something delicious, or out enjoying the outdoors, John found happiness in the simple pleasures of life.

John was one of a kind. He was strong-willed, hardworking, and full of character. He will be remembered for his love of family, his many talents, his love for the outdoors, and all the little things that made him who he was. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he leaves behind will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Coco Burkhart; his parents, J.P. Magee and Eula Mae Fortenberry Magee; and his grandson, John Allen Bell Jr. (JJ).

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Michael Bell, John Allen Bell, Nelson Anderle, and Valerie Griffin; his grandchildren, Chasity, Shelby, Kort, Kaitlyn, Addie, Harley, and Brooke; his great-grandchildren, Case, Corlee, Hailey, Layla, Ila, Adalynne, Amelia, and John; and his sister, Beth.

John’s life was filled with hard work, family, and the things he loved most. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, stories, and a family who will forever love and miss him. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, starting at 2 p.m., at Grayburg Baptist Church in Sour Lake, Texas.
