A five-vehicle accident between Cleveland and Tarkington blocked traffic on SH 321 for nearly four hours Friday night, July 20. The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. where SH 321 intersects with CR 2243, directly in front of Big Thicket Animal Hospital.
State troopers say they are still determining the contributing factors of the accident. Preliminary information suggests that a westbound car was turning north onto CR 2243 with another vehicle stopped behind it. Another westbound vehicle, a large truck, reportedly clipped the second vehicle before veering into the eastbound lane, striking a truck head-on. A fifth vehicle clipped the wrecked vehicles before coming to a rest in the westbound shoulder.
One driver was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. His condition is unknown at this hour. Two persons were transported by ground ambulance to Kingwood Hospital, one was taken to Northeast Memorial and one was transported to Texas Rural Hospital in Cleveland.
The names of the persons involved in the accident will be released once troopers conclude their investigation.
Assisting Trooper William Koen and DPS Sgt. Rob Willoughby with the accident investigation were deputies with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department, Cleveland Fire Department, Smith Towing and J&J Wrecker Service. The Liberty County Sheriff’s UAV Unit assisted by shooting aerial videos.
