Tarkington VFD fundraiser hailed a success

Tarkington Fire Chief Paul Gregory (center) got by with a little help from his friends, Splendora ISD Police Chief Rex Evans (left) and Woodville firefighter Alan Gartner, at Saturday's annual barbecue fundraiser. It was a long morning for all who prepared the meals and readied items for the auction.

The proceeds are still being tallied, but Tarkington VFD Fire Chief Paul Gregory said this year’s barbecue and auction fundraiser on Saturday was the best-attended in recent memory.

“We sold out of all the barbecue – chicken, brisket and sausage. The auction was amazing. As far as the dollar amount raised, I can’t tell what that is yet,” Gregory said. “There are still some checks that need to be turned in so we can get a final count.”

Some items were sold, and then bidders donated them again and again, causing some items to be bid on three times before being finally sold.

“It went way better than we thought it would. It was such a blessing today to see the support of the community,” the chief said. “I want to thank everyone for coming out.”

Gregory said that numerous businesses and individuals donated to the auction, Kountry Boy Sausage of Brenham provided three cases of sausages, Tammy Fierro and a group of volunteers from Tarkington Learning Center helped serve food, Jeff Overstreet acted as the auctioneer, and Cleveland Police Department dispatcher Tommy Pressley prepared all of the potato salad.
