3 arrested in connection to teen’s murder in Cleveland

Eluid Barberena-Mota (left) and Javier Lopez (right) have been named as suspects in the July 17 fatal shooting of a 16-year-old in Cleveland. Police have also charged a 14-year-old for his involvement in the crime.

Cleveland Police Department investigators have charged three males with the July 17 fatal shooting of a 16-year-old, Guillermo Reyes Jr., of Cleveland, in the H-E-B parking lot in Cleveland.

The three suspects – Javier Lopez, 17, and Eliud Barberena-Mota, 17, both of Cleveland, and an unnamed 15-year-old juvenile – are facing charges of Capital Murder.

Lopez was arrested July 20 in the Houston area and was transported back to Cleveland Police Department. His bond was set at $2 million by Municipal Court Judge Bob Steely.

On Monday, July 22, Liberty County sheriff’s deputies detained the 15-year-old suspect. Later that evening, Mota, who goes by the nickname “Sleepy,” was arrested that evening around 7:40 p.m. Mota is alleged to be the shooter in the incident. His bond is also set at $2 million.

Robbery appears to have been the motive, authorities say.

Cleveland Police Department worked closely with several other law enforcement agencies that have provided important information, and support that has helped to solve this case. 

Chief Darrel Broussard added that he would like to thank the Texas Rangers, State Fire Marshal’s Office, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Houston Police Department’s Gang-TAG Division, Liberty County District Attorney’s Office, The Liberty County Attorney’s Office, ATF-Beaumont Violent Crimes Unit and Cleveland ISD Police Department.       

Chief Broussard went on to say Cleveland PD detectives and officers have devoted many long hours in the last six days to bring closure to this case.
