On August 2, 2019, Troop 8 Scout Sammy Wells passed his Board of Review for Eagle Scout thus obtaining scouting’s highest honor, The Eagle Scout Award. He is the son of Mr. Marty Wells and Mrs. Dawn Wells.
Under the leadership and guidance of Scoutmaster Paul D. Newton, Troop 8 sponsored by Eastgate Church of Dayton, Sammy has been a member for six years and has earned 36 merit badges. As a BSA National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) graduate, he has served his troop over these years as Patrol Leader, Den Chief, Senior Patrol Leader and is currently the Troop Guide. Sammy is an active Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s Honor Society, serving as a past Chapter Secretary of Hasinai Lodge. In 2018, Sammy represented Three Rivers Council at the Annual Report to State event in Austin, Texas, where he delivered the Council’s report.
As a member of Troop 8, Sammy has camped over 110 nights in the outdoors having participated in numerous weekend camp-outs and attending camps at El Rancho Cima in Wimberley, Texas, Sid Richardson Scout Ranch in Decatur, Texas, Bear Creek Scout Reservation in Hunt, Texas, and Trevor Rees-Jones Scout Camp in Athens, Texas. Sammy continues to be active in Scouting and recently attended Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM for a 12-day backpacking trek where he hiked close to 140 miles with other Scouts from Troop 8.
This fall, Sammy will attend Dayton High School as a senior. He is an accomplished musician, leader, and trumpet player in the Dayton High School Band having attended Regional Solo and Ensemble Contest, and currently serves as Section Leader. Sammy is also a member of the National Honor Society (NHS) and was in the Business Professionals of America (BPA) where he won the Statesman Award at State Leadership Conference. Sammy was a member of the Theatre Class and Drama Club for two years and was inducted into the International Thespian Society. He participated in the UIL One Act Play and was awarded Best Supporting Actor by the Dayton Theater Department in 2017. Sammy also won 2nd Place playing the piano for the 2018 Dayton High School Talent Show.
For his Eagle Scout community service project, Sammy, planned and installed new signage for the Colbert Elementary School Museum. This project required Sammy to supervise a team of Scouts who designed and built a sign to raise awareness of the museum and inform visitors when it is open. In all, over 170-man hours were spent planning, designing, and building the sign.
Sammy is the 16th Eagle Scout to come from Troop 8 since its founding in 2005. A ceremony honoring Sammy will take place this fall. Family and friends will be invited to attend.

Sponsored by Eastgate Church of Dayton, Texas, Boy Scout Troop 8 is one of the largest Boy Scout Troops in Liberty County and Trinity District. Being a full uniform, Scout run Troop, BSA Troop 8 holds monthly camping activities and regularly attends summer and winter camps in Texas and/or Louisiana each year. Troop 8 is the only Scouting unit in Liberty County that has High Adventure activities for older Scouts and standard camping activities for younger Scouts. Troop 8 is for ALL age boys 10 through 18. Troop 8 meets weekly on Tuesday nights at 6:30pm at Eastgate Church in Dayton and is open to any young man who has completed the 5th grade and is at least 10 years old or is 11 years old, but has not reached age 18.
