ICE detainee dead from apparent suicide in Liberty County Jail

A 35-year-old inmate in the Liberty County Jail is dead from an apparent suicide, according to Capt. Ken DeFoor, spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

Cristian David Sarmiento was found dead in his cell around 5:10 p.m. Thursday during a routine bed check by jail staff. He had reportedly fashioned a noose from his bedsheet and hanged himself.

Sarmiento was arrested by Liberty Police Department on Aug. 4 on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and was being detained for deportation. He was previously arrested on July 6, 2019, for Driving While Intoxicated with a blood alcohol level of twice the legal limit.

The investigation into Sarmiento’s death will be conducted by the Texas Rangers.
