A 58-year-old inmate at the Liberty County Jail was found unresponsive in his cell around 7 p.m. Thursday and died a short time later at the Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center.
Authorities say the deceased male, described only as a black male, was alone in his cell at the time and appears to have suffered a medical emergency that led to his death. He was found by a fellow trustee.
CPR was performed until medical personnel arrived. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.
Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Stephen Hebert conducted an inquest and ordered an autopsy, which will be performed Monday in Beaumont.
The prisoner’s name is not being released until his family has been fully notified.
