Members of Liberty High School and Liberty Middle School bands represented their respective schools in both the ATSSB Region X Honor Bands and at the MA Classic Color Guard competition on Jan. 25.
To earn a spot in the Honor Bands, students competed in November and December against their peers from 27 other school districts. Representing Liberty Middle School in the ATSSB Honor Band were clarinetist Lexi Chaparro and baritone saxophonist Joseph Girard. Representing Liberty High School was percussionist Casey Hortman, who not only earned a spot in the Region Band but earlier this month advanced to compete at the Area level in Tyler, Texas. The students rehearsed with their respective groups for the first time in Silsbee, Texas, on Saturday morning, with the day culminating in a concert performance that night.
More than a hundred miles away, at South Houston High School, the Liberty High School Color Guard competed in their first MA Dance and Color Guard Classic festival. The ladies performed a flag and rifle routine for the judges, earning a Superior Performance trophy as well as their category’s award for Outstanding Choreography.

Members of the guard are Senior Captain Kaytlyn Frankum, Junior Michelle LeDoux, Sophomores Sophia Buddington and Camilla Jordan, and Freshman Julianne Shivers, under the supervision of band director Jessie L. Smith. The guard will next compete at the MA Dance National Dance & Auxiliary Championship in Fort Worth, Texas, in March.
