Authorities say alcohol is being considered as a contributing factor in a fatal accident early Saturday morning, Feb. 24, just west of the SH 105 bridge over the Trinity River.
The two decedents, both of Houston, were traveling eastbound in a 2007 silver Toyota Camry when the driver of the vehicle failed to stay in his lane and traveled into the path of an oncoming 2005 Lexus SC 430 driven by a 53-year-old man from Willis, Texas.
Both of the deceased men died at the scene. The Willis man, along with five other passengers between the two vehicles, were transported to area hospitals. The Willis man was airlifted to HCA Kingwood in serious condition. At this time, the names of all of the parties in the crash are being withheld pending the notification of their next of kin.
According to Sgt. Rob Willoughby, supervisor for the Liberty County office of the Texas Department of Public Safety, multiple open containers of alcohol were found inside the Toyota Camry, including one in the lap of the deceased driver.
Willoughby said the accident was entirely preventable and cautions against drinking and driving.
“Alcohol related crashes are 100 percent preventable and they do nothing but put the driver and the motoring public at risk. It is always better to find a designated driver or stay at the location where you began consuming alcohol. Besides, you cannot afford a DWI in Texas,” Sgt. Willoughby said.
The accident is being investigated by Troopers Austin Alexander and William Koen.
An update will be posted as soon as the names of the victims are released.
