Sheriff: Alleged shooter in Raywood incident arrested after pursuit with law enforcement

A Raywood man accused of shooting at family members outside a home on CR 190 in the Raywood area inside a vehicle Thursday morning, March 7, and prompting school campus lock-ins across parts of Liberty County is now in custody.

Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader told Bluebonnet News that the suspect – John Johnson, 37, of Raywood, is being transported to a hospital after he wrecked his vehicle on Batson Prairie Road in neighboring Hardin County around 11 a.m, just two hours after the shooting incident.

Johnson was the subject of a manhunt for the last two hours. His vehicle – a dark Toyota Camry – was spotted by authorities in the Silsbee area where an alleged pursuit began. The pursuit continued through Hardin County toward Liberty County. Liberty County law enforcement personnel were also part of the pursuit and apprehension of Johnson.

According to Capt. David Meyers, a spokesperson with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson wrecked his vehicle in a ditch and was immediately apprehended.

Johnson was transported to a hospital in Cleveland for a medical evaluation and then will be turned over to authorities.

Meyers said Johnson is facing a charge of Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon. Other charges may be pending.

The two persons who were allegedly fired upon by Johnson were his mother and stepfather. They did not suffer a gunshot wound, however, but may have been cut by the window glass that was blown out during the shooting.
