Shooting in Raywood-Daisetta area prompts precautionary measures at local schools

Hardin ISD Superintendent Scott Mackey fields phone calls from campus personnel while talking to School Resource Officer Maritza Cespedes.

A shooting around 9 a.m. Thursday, March 7, in the Raywood-Daisetta area, caused concern among parents and members of the nearby communities after school campuses around the county were placed on holds, also known as lock-ins. This was a precautionary measure only and at no point were the children and school personnel in immediate danger, authorities say.

According to Capt. David Meyers, a spokesperson for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting took place on CR 190 and apparently was sparked by a family disturbance.

“It is my understanding at this time that the suspect shot at a vehicle. We do not believe the person inside the vehicle was shot at this time. We believe the person was struck by glass. That person is being checked out at a hospital,” Meyers said.

The suspect, who authorities have not named at this time, is a male driving a dark gray or black Toyota Camry. It is believed he has since fled the area and may be in the Kountze area.

Hardin ISD Superintendent Scott Mackey explained that unlike a “lockdown,” a “hold” simply keeps students in their classrooms until the threat has passed. At no time whatsoever were the students in harm’s way.

The response from law enforcement agencies and school resource officers was swift with personnel being staked outside campuses and along highways leading into and out of the area.

Mackey said Hardin ISD, in particular, was fortunate to have dozens of law enforcement personnel training at the old elementary campus on SH 146 North, which would have enabled them to be at the other campuses within a moment’s notice.
