Power is out in most of the city of Liberty on Monday morning after a primary line failed near the intersection of San Jacinto Avenue and Grand Avenue, according to Liberty City Manager Tom Warner. The estimated completion time for the repairs is four hours, though Warner believes power may be restored sooner than estimated.
Crews with Texas Elite Electrical are on site and making repairs, Warner said.
When the power line dropped to the ground, it caused a backfeed of power to the Beaumont Ave. and Liberty (FM 3361) substations, so once the line is repaired, some additional checking will be needed to make sure that the two substations are operating properly.
The power outage caused the closure of the Liberty County Courthouse for the day, though other businesses, including First Liberty Bank and Walmart, are not impacted. Also still in operation are the City of Liberty, Liberty Fire Department and Liberty Police Department, all of which have emergency generators in place.
As to why the line failed, Warner said it is believed that the line might have been spliced when it was originally installed, and the spliced section failed.
“We apologize for any inconvenience it might cause people. It was a mechanical failure, and although we try to plan for these, sometimes they happen without warning,” he said.
