Liberty County Judge Jay Knight has been honored by the Texas Association of Counties’ (TAC) Texas Judicial Academy for going the extra mile. The Academy recognizes county judges who attain significant judicial education beyond state requirements as fellows.
The Academy inducted several county judges as fellows during its Spring 2024 Judicial Education Session, held March 27-29 in Lubbock, Texas.
The Texas Judicial Academy is a partnership between TAC and the Texas Tech University School of Law. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals oversees the educational program, which includes instruction by higher court judges, law school faculty and representatives of the Texas Probate College and the National Judicial College.
TAC unites, supports and provides services to Texas counties so they can more effectively serve their local communities.
Judge Knight has served as county judge since January 2015, being elected to the office in November 2014. He previously served on Dayton City Council, Dayton Community Development Corporation board and the Dayton Beautification Committee. He is credited with helping to design the memorial fountain at the Dayton Community Center and the veterans memorial at US 90 and SH 146.
He currently serves as chair-elect for the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC), for which he previously served as vice chair and on numerous committees, and is the current chairman of the U.S. Highway 90 Resiliency Committee.
He and his wife, Jan, a retired educator, live in Dayton. When he is not performing work for the county, Knight enjoys playing the fiddle and “punching cattle” at a ranch in Walker County.

No one deserves the honor more than Jay. He runs his office first class along with his first class office personnel. Liberty County should be extremely proud for such a dedicated public servant. Jay we are more than proud. C. Bruce Stratton cbsesq@slfliberty.com
