David Ronald Hargis, affectionately known as “Super Dave” or “CD,” passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024, just two days before his 68th birthday. He was born on July 15, 1956, in San Angelo, Texas, to the late Elmo Ronald and Mary Kathryn Crowley Hargis; he most recently resided in Liberty, Texas.
David had a passion for music and was a devoted fan of David Phelps, Steve Green, and The Moody Blues. He possessed a unique singing voice reminiscent of Jim Nabors and a speaking voice akin to Gomer Pyle. David also deeply loved Mexican food and enjoyed indulging in his favorite dishes.
Nothing was more important to David than his wife and their beloved fur babies. Home was his favorite place in the world, where he found solace in watching TV shows like “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Gunsmoke,” and “The Rifleman.” As a football enthusiast, David was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan.
David attended McAllen High School, graduating in 1974. He later pursued higher education at East Texas State University and Pan Am University. Professionally, David worked as an oil field pumper and ultimately became a foreman at Denbury Resources, where he achieved great success.
In his spare time, David was actively involved in his community. He regularly donated blood and helped lead worship at First Baptist Church in Liberty. He spent the last 20+ years in many Valley Players’ Musicals. David played many memorable, endearing characters.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Elmo Ronald Hargis and Mary Kathryn Crowley Hargis; and brother-in-law Weston Lee Herndon. He is survived by his adoring wife of 37 years, Holly Hargis; his brothers, Steve Hargis (Donna) and Sam Hargis (Gay); his nieces, Shelly Lynn Hargis, Lindsey Hargis, Mary Kathryn Heinz, Claire Carpenter, Bailee Patterson, and Savannah Herndon; his nephews Reese Herndon and Ethan Herndon. He leaves a legacy of love, generosity, and a beautiful smile that brightened the lives of those around him.
Although David had five children waiting for him in heaven, his heart was always filled with love for the countless pets he cared for. His current pets, Hannah, Cassie, Georgia, Max, Petunia, Sissy, Lilly, JJ, and Pepper held a special place in his heart.
David will be remembered for his cheerful and upbeat demeanor, giving nature, and profound impact on others through his work and music. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Reese Herndon, Gene Corral, Tom Richert, Chuck Smesny, Rob Haberle, and John Harrelson will honor the family by serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Lee Garner, Paul Stewart, and Bob Lawrence.
Friends are invited to visit with the family at 2 pm on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the First Baptist Church Liberty, 602 Main Street in Liberty. A funeral service will be held at 3 pm to celebrate David’s life, allowing friends and family to unite and honor his memory. A graveside service and committal will immediately follow in Cooke Memorial Cemetery in Liberty.
The family would like to thank the wonderful employees at Harbor Hospice: Shannon, Kristy, Sandra, and Michelle. Your compassionate care and unwavering support during this challenging time were deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten. Thank you for your dedication and kindness.
Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to First Baptist Church of Liberty, Texas, The Valley Players of Liberty, or ThisIsHouston animal rescue.
