U.S. Representative Brian Babin (R-District 36) appeared before a gathering of business leaders, elected officials, and city officials on Wednesday, Aug. 7, to discuss a range of topics relevant to his constituents in Southeast Texas. The meeting provided an opportunity for Babin to express gratitude, share updates on legislative efforts, and address issues facing the region and the nation.

Rep. Babin began by expressing appreciation for the warm welcome he received and the community’s ongoing support.

“I just want to say thank you for all that you do for this community and making me feel at home today,” he said.

Highlighting his commitment to the area, he said, “One of the most proud things is that I really, really consider it an honor and a privilege to represent these eight counties in Southeast Texas.”

Babin praised the community’s patriotism, emphasizing residents’ shared belief in American values. He mentioned his conversations with local educators and law enforcement, acknowledging the challenges they face, particularly a “loss of respect for authority in the United States of America.”

In a nod to traditional values, Babin advocated for the return of old-fashioned discipline, which he believes would restore respect for elders and teachers.

“We have whole segments of cities, counties across this country that just don’t think they have to show respect for authority anymore,” he commented.

Babin and his dedicated staff

Introducing his staff, Babin highlighted their achievements in serving the district, noting, “My team has also saved the people of the 36th Congressional District over $24.4 million. And according to the U.S. Census Bureau estimates, Liberty County is now the third fastest-growing county, not in Texas, the third fastest-growing county in the United States. It’s an amazing thought. And Chambers County, where I was a little bit earlier this morning, that’s sixth place in the nation. People like East Texas. They like Southeast Texas, the Greater Houston Area, and that’s a good thing.”

Babin also addressed the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, lamenting the end of what he described as “the best economy we’ve seen in 50 years.” He criticized federal and state employees who still have not returned to work post-pandemic.

As co-chair of the House Border Security Caucus, Babin emphasized the need for strong border security. He expressed concern over the number of individuals crossing the border illegally and the potential threat of terrorism.

“It’s really kind of sad to think, it’s scary to think that we may be headed to another 9-11,” Babin warned.

Turning to economic issues, Babin highlighted the burden of inflation on American families.

“The average family is offering up about $14,000 extra a year because of inflation,” he noted, blaming government overspending for the rising national debt.

He stressed the need for fiscal responsibility to prevent inflation from spiraling out of control.

Babin stressed the importance of election integrity as the upcoming general election approaches. He believes that elections should be managed by the states to avoid federal overreach.

“We have a unique system of government in the world,” Babin said, adding the need for confidence in the electoral process to prevent division and unrest.

Addressing pervasive suggestions about Texas potentially seceding from the Union, Babin expressed his opposition to the idea, advocating instead for national unity. He expressed sadness for the division among Americans and said it is important to come together as Americans to ensure the country’s survival.

Babin highlighted the narrow margins in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, urging voters to maintain Republican control and gain a majority in the Senate. He urged everyone to vote in the Nov. 5 general election.

He also voiced concerns about what he perceives as the weaponization of the Justice Department against political opponents, including former President Donald J. Trump.

“Justice has to be blind,” he said.
