Deborah Sue Merritt, 55, of Beach City, Texas, passed away on Monday Aug. 12, 2004, with her loving family by her side. She was born on Aug. 26, 1968, in Houston, Texas, to Billy Wayne and Delores Sue Merritt.
Debbie moved to Barbers Hill in 1975 with her family. Debbie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved her dogs they where a huge part of her life as she called them her kids. She played basketball, band performing trumpet solos and track. She loved playing golf with her friends. Debbie was a true tomboy growing up. She enjoyed doing wood working projects. She loved fishing with her father and singing and acting silly with her mother. Her brother taught her how to ride a bicycle and a motorcycle, just not how to stop either one. After graduating high school from Barbers Hill as Salutatorian in 1986 she went to College at UT Austin majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
After graduating from UT Austin with a degree in Aerospace engineering in the early 1990s, Debbie started at the Rockwell Space Operations Company supporting operations planning for the NASA Space Shuttle Program. She was a talented engineer who specialized in the development of computer simulation models used to evaluate each Space Shuttle launch.
Her work eventually included leading a team that updated Space Shuttle steering tables using launch day wind measurements to reduce the dynamic forces on the Space Shuttle for every launch. She and her team were crucial to ensure the Space Shuttle and its Crew made it to space safely during every launch. Her post-Space Shuttle career included working as a civil servant in the Aero Sciences and Flight Mechanics Division at NASA JSC supporting Constellation and subsequently the Artemis Moon to Mars Programs.
She was a critical member of the Artemis crew capsule team and contributed greatly to the Exploration Flight Test 1 and Artemis I mission. It is not an exaggeration to say that she made major contributions toward returning Americans to the moon. Throughout her career, her coworkers would come to her for guidance and knew her as someone who was always willing to help a fellow coworker make sense of a complicated problem. She was an excellent engineer and an amazing human. Her technical abilities, sense of humor, and tenacity to solve problems were an inspiration. All her coworkers agree that it was a true privilege to work with her.
Debbie is preceded in death by her parents, Billy Wayne and Delores Sue Merritt; her paternal grandparents, John and Ilene Merritt; her maternal grandparents, Raymond and Georgia McElvogue; and her aunts and uncles, Ernestine and Bob Westbrook, and Ronald McElvogue.
She is survived by her brother, John Merritt and his wife Michelle of Anahuac, Texas; her uncles, Charles Merritt and his wife Mary Ann of Pearland, Texas, Mike Merritt of El Dorado, Arkansas, and Donald McElvogue and his wife Denise of Tyler, Texas; her aunt Jeanne McElvogue of Cold Springs, Texas; her nieces and nephews, Christopher Merritt of Anahuac, Texas, Katelynn Hennigan and her husband Jacob of Winnie, Texas, Aaron Nash of Mont Belvieu, Texas, and Trevor Nash of Anahuac, Texas; her great nieces and nephews, Kalynn, Natalie, and Josie Nash of Mont Belvieu, Texas, and Brentlee and Logan Hennigan of Winnie, Texas; as well as a host of other loving relatives and friends.
