Emergency repairs begin on FM 787 bridge over Trinity River

The FM 787 bridge over the Trinity River in Romayor, which has been closed since May 7, 2024, after severe flooding washed out the approaches on the west side, is now undergoing emergency repairs.

Ragle Construction, Inc. of North Richland Hills, Texas, has been awarded an $11.8 million contract to carry out the necessary repairs, which officially began on Monday, Sept. 9.

The first phase of the project involves the removal of the damaged approach and spans on the west side of the bridge. According to officials with the Texas Department of Transportation, the completion of repairs will depend on several factors, including weather conditions and material availability, but work is expected to take four to six months.

This bridge, originally built in 1976 and extended in 2003, is no stranger to prolonged closures. From May 2019 until the summer of 2022, it was out of commission due to a washout on its east side, causing significant disruptions to the daily lives of residents and businesses in the surrounding communities.

With the most recent washout, residents are once again forced to find alternative routes. Many are opting to take lengthy detours via the SH 105 bridge in Moss Hill.

  1. Oh is that what it’s called-“emergency repairs” , it happened may 7th. It’s been June 7th, July 7th, august 7th, and September 7th……

  2. I was at that meeting and to say that the communities “backlash” was comical might be an understatement. Not very many people actually put their best thoughts forward and instead repeatedly brought up very trivial questions. Doug, an emergency repair could not have taken place days, weeks, or a month or two after this bridge went down. Your near sightedness dismisses the fact that the river itself took weeks to months to recede from all the rain we had in order to fully assess the damage. And, the time it took to then discuss repairs and find a suitable contractor didn’t just happen over night either. To be quite honest, where I live, I wish that bridge would cease to exist all together because it’s been SO quiet and peaceful.

  3. 787 bridge would make a nice alternative for XTX bikers, Hikers, & Horsers …. especially Hikers who want to do the whole Lone Star Trail during their hike from Bon Wier Sabine river bridge to El Paso.
