Fatal crash claims life of Liberty man

A fatal accident occurred on FM 563 south of Liberty at approximately 8:55 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, claiming the life of 21-year-old Marques Anthony Sthram of Liberty.

The crash took place when a 2012 Jeep Patriot, driven by Sthram, attempted to pass a 2013 Mac truck pulling a trailer in a no-passing zone.

According to DPS reports, Sthram’s vehicle was traveling northbound behind the truck and trailer, driven by 57-year-old Javier Galvan of Houston. While trying to pass the truck illegally, the Jeep struck the left side of the trailer with its passenger side.

The impact caused the Jeep to veer across the southbound lane, where it collided with a utility pole, leading the vehicle to roll onto its left side. The Jeep sustained serious damage, and Sthram was pronounced dead at the scene by Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Stephen Hebert. Galvan, the driver of the Mac truck, was uninjured.

Sgt. Rob Willoughby, supervisor of the Liberty County office of the Texas Department of Public Safety, emphasized the dangers of speeding and reckless driving, particularly when drivers are in a rush.

“People don’t realize when they are speeding and do things like this that they do not gain time when they are running late. You might gain a couple of minutes, but it’s not worth your life or the lives of others,” he said.

DPS Trooper Natalie Aguirre investigated the crash and was assisted Troopers William Koen, Corey Prantil and Levi Wilcox.
