The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced that construction on US 90 at the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) in Dayton is set to begin on July 7, weather permitting. This project marks a significant effort to improve the roadway and enhance safety in the area.
The construction will kick off with work on the north side of US 90, focusing primarily on widening the road to accommodate increased traffic flow and improve driving conditions.
To ensure the safety of both construction workers and motorists, TxDOT will temporarily reduce the speed limit in the work zone from 65 mph to 45 mph. This reduced speed limit will stretch from Sunset Heights Avenue to SH 146 and remain in place throughout the duration of the project.
TxDOT also reminds drivers to stay alert and drive safely through all construction zones. Key safety tips include:
- Slow down
- Pay attention
- Watch out for road crews
- Don’t tailgate
- Allow extra travel time
Construction is expected to be completed by Fall 2027. TxDOT encourages all drivers to plan ahead and exercise caution when traveling through the area during this time.

Yay so we get 6 years of even WORSE traffic in Dayton. Maybe it will actually be a solution though so grin and bear it.
Still keeping the RR crossing on 90 at-grade? Kinda lame given the traffic going to and from Houston. This would be a prime opportunity to build a RR overpass on 90 right there, even if 146 and/or 321 have to be involved.
At-grade RR crossings are still the worst, which is why Northpark Drive at the front of Kingwood is getting a RR overpass. Give US 90 the same treatment already.
