Carolyn Ranney Burkhalter, 92, of Anahuac, Texas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Liberty, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.
Carolyn was born on May 19, 1933, in Little Rock, Ark., to the late Oscar and Ruby Smith Ranney. She dedicated more than two decades of her life to serving her community as the Deputy Tax Assessor for Chambers County, retiring in the early 2000s. Known for her no-nonsense charm and spitfire spirit, Carolyn lived life to the fullest, always putting her family at the center of everything she did.
She shared a special bond with her beloved husband, Phillip Bryan Burkhalter. Together, they were a lively pair—traveling all over the state with their grandchildren and never passing up a chance to square dance. Whether on the dance floor or the road, they were always on the go, making memories with those they loved most.
A devoted member of the First Methodist Church in Anahuac, Carolyn participated in the church’s Sunday School and Meals on Wheels program. Her strong sense of community and compassionate heart touched many lives. She was known as a fireball—fiercely protective, endlessly caring, and delightfully funny. She cussed like a sailor, laughed from the gut, and brought a creative flair and vibrant energy to every room she entered. Her children describe her simply and profoundly: an awesome mother, and a blessing to them all.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; all eight of her siblings and her half-brother; and her beloved husband, Phillip.
She is survived by her children, Karen Jones and husband Billy Hanf of Anahuac, Texas, and Bryan Burkhalter of Anahuac, Texas; her grandchildren, Clay Hanf of Wallisville, Texas, Erica Austin and husband Chase of Winnie, Texas, Kendall Burkhalter of Universal City, Texas, and Claire Burkhalter of New Braunfels, Texas; and her great-grandchildren, Jewelia, Jacey, June, Jentry, Jeremiah Austin and Olivia and Sophia Hanf. She also leaves behind a host of loving relatives and dear friends.
Friends are invited to gather with the family on Tuesday, June 26, 2025, beginning at 5 p.m. in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main St., Anahuac, Texas 77514. A celebration of Carolyn’s life will follow at 6 p.m., with Pastor Jamie Lea officiating.
Carolyn’s legacy of love, laughter, and fierce devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
