In loving memory of Nelda Miles
A Tribute to a Life Well Lived
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Nelda Ruth (Walker) Miles. She was a kind, caring and loving Christian woman. Her journey, though now complete in the physical realm, leaves behind a legacy of kindness, wisdom, and enduring love that will continue to inspire and comfort family, friends, and the countless others she touched along the way.
Nelda was born on Jan. 5, 1930, in Beaumont, Texas, to Calvin R. and Lona (Vann) Walker. As a young child, they moved to Barbers Hill, Texas and later to the Anahuac, Texas area, where she attended school, graduating from Anahuac High School in 1947. Upon graduating high school, Nelda enrolled in Sam Houston State Teachers College. She often joked that she decided to forego more than one semester, wanting her MRS more than her BS.
While attending school in Anahuac, she met the love of her life, G.L. (Bobby) Miles. They were married at her parents’ home in Hankamer, Texas on May 29, 1949. They were married for over 52 years, until Bobby’s passing in 2002.
Nelda loved music. She sang in the First Baptist Church of Anahuac’s choir, and a group known as The Love Notes. She played the piano for various churches, and other groups.
She worked in the Fahring Clinic, her parents’ grocery store, and later co-owned and operated, with her mother, a women’s and children’s clothing store, the Dar-Len Shop. She later worked as a substitute teacher, and in the County Clerk’s office. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Anahuac Chapter No. 649 for over 50 years.
At the core of her life was an abiding devotion to her Lord, Jesus Christ. Her family was always a priority. As a spouse, parent, grandparent, sibling, or friend, she provided guidance, steadfast support and unconditional love. She and Bobby were survived by two children, Darlene (Miles) Peters and G. L. (Len) Miles, Jr. She had three grandchildren, Helen Peters, Katherine (Peters) Kiminki and her husband David Kiminki, and Matthew Miles, as well as two great grandchildren, David and Olivia Kiminki.
She left behind a legacy of service, kindness and generosity. Through actions big and small, she showed what it means to live a full life with an open heart.
There will be a visitation with the family from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac on May 28, followed by a graveside service at the Anahuac Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ESA Sorority, the Anahuac Cemetery Association, or another charity of your choice.
