From Cleveland Police Chief Darrel Broussard
The Cleveland Police Department encourages motorists to remain vigilant of children walking on or near public roadways with the start of the new school year.
As most residents know, Cleveland has few sidewalks, and pedestrians often must walk along the edge of paved roads. Motorists are urged to reduce their speed accordingly.
Cleveland Police Department officers will actively patrol school zones and enforce speed limits. Violators will be cited to ensure the safety of children. Police recommend citizens allow extra time in the morning to avoid rushing.
Motorists on highways or public streets must stop when approaching a school bus displaying flashing warning lights for loading and unloading students. Traffic from both directions is required to stop and must not proceed until the bus resumes motion or the visual warning signals are turned off. Additional details can be found in the Texas Transportation Code, Sec. 545.066.
Motorists who commit the offense “Failing to stop or remain stopped for a school bus” face a misdemeanor charge punishable by a fine ranging from $500 to $1,250. Upon a second conviction, the judge may suspend the offender’s license for at least six months. Charges may be enhanced if the violation results in serious bodily injury or increased to a felony if the individual has a prior conviction for the same offense.
Police ask motorists to heighten their awareness in school zones, reduce speed when approaching pedestrians, and carefully observe school buses, whether or not their warning lights are activated.
The Cleveland Police Department wishes everyone a safe and successful school year.
