Fatal crash victim’s fiancée arrested for marriage license forgery

Wortham, Tanna

An 18-year-old Cleveland woman involved in a fatal accident that claimed the life of her reported fiancé is now facing an unrelated felony charge. Tanna Wortham has been charged with Forgery of a Government Document, a third-degree felony, according to Liberty County Sheriff’s Capt. David Meyers.

Wortham and 23-year-old Joshua Dixon, who was tragically killed in the July 18 accident, reportedly had claimed they were married in July after obtaining a marriage license from the Liberty County Clerk’s Office. However, once the marriage license was returned to Clerk’s Office, investigators discovered the marriage license had a forged signature of a well-known local minister.

The Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the alleged forgery last week, prompting an investigation that confirmed the signature was fraudulent. After consulting with the Liberty County District Attorney’s Office, authorities charged Wortham with the felony charge. She was arrested on July 30.

Meyers noted that simply being aware of the forgery justified the charge, though it remains unclear who actually forged the signature. Investigators confirmed that Dixon and Wortham were not legally married. Meyers said a motive for the alleged fraud is unknown at this time.

Wortham remains in custody at the Liberty County Jail. Bond information was not immediately available.

Meyers emphasized that the forgery investigation is separate from the ongoing investigation of the fatal accident by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

In the accident, Wortham was driving a 2003 Nissan Altima northbound on SH 321, closely followed by Dixon, who was riding a 2004 Honda Shadow motorcycle. Dixon reportedly texted Wortham indicating he was low on gas. Wortham pulled onto the shoulder to make a U-turn toward a gas station but turned directly into Dixon’s path. Dixon was unable to avoid the collision and suffered fatal injuries at the scene.
