Softball tourney on Saturday in Liberty to benefit Special Response Team

A day of fun, friendly competition, and community support is in store for Liberty County residents on Saturday, Aug. 9, as a double-elimination softball tournament will be held at Liberty Municipal Park to benefit the Special Response Team (SRT).

This fundraising event aims to generate support for the SRT Team by raising money for gear, uniforms, and other essential items not currently covered by the sheriff’s office budget.

Sgt. Travis Pierce, one of the tournament’s organizers and a member of the SRT Team, said the money will help with “equipment, uniforms, miscellaneous expenditures — stuff we can’t get through the normal budget.”

Games are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the day until the final game determines the tournament champion. As of Friday, Aug. 1, 10 teams had already signed up, and organizers hope to register more by game day.

The entry fee is $200 per team, with a minimum of nine players required. There is no charge for spectators, making it a great opportunity for families and friends to come out and enjoy a day at the park.

While the SRT Team members won’t be playing together as a team, they will be active in support roles throughout the event — serving food and drinks, managing logistics, and helping out wherever needed.

“We’re thankful to the City of Liberty for donating the use of three fields,” said Pierce. “It’s a generous gesture, and we’re grateful for the support.”

Attendees can also take part in raffles featuring various prizes, and the tournament winners will earn bragging rights and challenge coins, and also the feeling of helping out a team that helps the entire county.

Organizers are still in need of food and drink donations for the event. Anyone who would like to contribute or sign up a team is encouraged to contact Brianna Dryer at 936-727-9513.
