Liberty County Historical Commission announces walking tour

Members of the Liberty County Historical Commission prepare to lead an upcoming walking tour through Liberty’s historic “Inner Blocks,” highlighting the city’s early history and preserved landmarks.

Historic Liberty will take center stage on Sunday, April 26, as members of the Liberty County Historical Commission lead a walking tour through the old “Inner Blocks,” originally laid out by José Francisco Madero in May 1831 when the town of Liberty was officially founded.

The free tour will begin at 3 p.m. at the gazebo outside City Hall. The walk is expected to last about two hours at a relaxed pace. Participants should be able to walk and stand for extended periods, as accommodations for wheelchairs or other mobility devices will not be available. Docents will be equipped with speakers so everyone can hear along the way.

This year’s tour will highlight 10 historic sites and families, with a special focus on buildings that are still standing and well preserved. Along the route, guides will share architectural details, local history, and stories about the families who helped shape the community.

Members of the commission have spent months researching and preparing for the tour and are looking forward to sharing what they’ve uncovered about Liberty’s early and unique past.

Everyone is invited to attend and bring a friend. For more information, contact County Chair Linda Jamison at lchc318@gmail.com or 936-334-5813.
