Rheba Nell Josey Downey, 85, of Dayton, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026. She was born on May 23, 1940, in Evansville, Ind., to Charles L. Josey and Zona Kilburn Josey.
Rheba was a devoted member of Kenefick Southern Baptist Church. She enjoyed helping her mother-in-law at Downey’s Hobby Shop, where she enjoyed visiting with customers and making friendships. She also worked for many years at Gerland’s Florist, where her warm personality and beautiful smile brightened the lives of those around her.
Rheba never met a stranger. She loved people deeply and had a special gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. Her kindness, laughter, and caring heart will be remembered by all who knew her.
She was a resident of Dayton for the past 15 years and was formerly a longtime resident of Channelview, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 64 years, Jack M. Downey Jr.; her brother, Leslie Josey; and sister-in-law, Vera Josey.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Steven Dean Downey; daughter, Lisa Deanne Cox and husband Eddy L. Cox Jr.; grandchildren, Corey R. Cox and wife Sarah, Casey L. Cox, and Chase T. Cox; and great-grandchildren, Addilee, Emberly, Landon, and Elizabeth.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 15, 2026, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton, Texas. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Day officiating.
Burial will follow at San Jacinto Memorial Park in Houston, Texas.
