Veterans, patriots asked to line Cleveland overpass Wednesday morning to honor Korean veteran

Army Cpl. Orestus Marion Stewart has been missing in action since Aug. 11, 1950, near Pohang, South Korea. His remains were identified recently and are being returned to Magnolia Springs, Texas.

Veterans of Foreign Wars is calling on all veterans, patriots, and Americans in the Cleveland area to gather Wednesday morning, May 20, to honor the long-awaited return home of U.S. Army Cpl. Orestus Marion Stewart, a Korean War hero who was missing in action for more than 75 years.

Community members are asked to gather at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday on the overpass near Love’s and QT in Cleveland as the procession escorting Cpl. Stewart passes underneath at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring American flags and stand in tribute as the fallen soldier is welcomed home with the dignity and respect he earned through his sacrifice.

“After decades away from home, it is our duty to ensure Corporal Stewart’s return is met with dignity, patriotism, and gratitude,” organizers said.

Cpl. Stewart entered the U.S. Army from Texas and served with the Medical Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. He was killed in action on Aug. 11, 1950, near Pohang, South Korea, while defending Yonil Airfield from enemy attack.

Although his remains were recovered in 1954, they could not be identified at the time. Through the work of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, his remains have now been positively identified, allowing him to finally return home.

Funeral services for Cpl. Stewart will be held Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church in Magnolia Springs. Interment will follow at Springhill Cemetery with full military honors under the direction of Coleman’s Mortuary in Jasper.

Though his parents and many of the loved ones who waited for his return are no longer living, Cpl. Stewart will at last receive the homecoming and honor he deserved.

Welcome home, Corporal Stewart. You are not forgotten.
