Former Liberty police officer turns himself in following grand jury indictment

Grindstaff, Jason

A former Liberty police officer turned himself in Friday morning, July 3, after being indicted by a grand jury last month, according to the City of Liberty.

In a press release issued July 3, the city said former Officer Jason Grindstaff surrendered to authorities in connection with the indictment. The city did not disclose the charges, citing its policy of not commenting on ongoing criminal investigations or pending legal proceedings. However, jail records show he is booked in on charges of Official Oppression and Indecent Assault. He is being held without bond.

According to the release, Liberty Police Chief Richard Ashe was notified Dec. 3, 2025, of a complaint involving Grindstaff. That same day, the Texas Rangers opened an investigation and requested an interview with the officer. Immediately following the interview, Grindstaff was sent home pending further review.

The following day, Dec. 4, Chief Ashe placed Grindstaff on administrative leave.

Throughout the investigation, the Liberty Police Department cooperated fully with the Texas Rangers, providing requested records, documents and other materials, the city said.

Grindstaff resigned from his position with the City of Liberty on Feb. 27, 2026, while still on administrative leave.

The city said it does not comment on the details of ongoing criminal investigations or pending legal proceedings, noting that the practice helps preserve the integrity of the investigative and judicial processes while ensuring all parties receive fair consideration under the law.

“The City remains committed to maintaining public trust, accountability and professionalism in all municipal operations,” the release stated.

City officials said any additional questions regarding the criminal case should be directed to the appropriate prosecutorial or law enforcement authorities.
