Edwin Earl “Shorty” Sample Sr., age 86, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on July 28, 2026, in Humble, Texas. He was born on May 16, 1940, in Spurger, Texas, and lived a life defined by faith, hard work, and an unwavering love for his family and friends.
A faithful servant of the Lord, Shorty lived his life with honesty, humility, and a servant’s heart. He believed in treating people with kindness, working hard, and always being willing to lend a helping hand. His quiet faith guided him throughout his life and was reflected in the way he cared for his family and those around him.
Shorty dedicated his career to working as a diesel mechanic, a profession that perfectly matched his remarkable mechanical abilities and strong work ethic. He retired as Top Head Mechanic with Performance Trucks, where his knowledge, experience, and dedication earned the admiration of coworkers and customers alike. If something had an engine, there was a good chance Shorty could repair it. He approached every challenge with patience, determination, and pride in a job well done.
His talents extended far beyond the garage. Shorty was a gifted woodworker and skilled craftsman who could build, repair, and create anything with his hands. He loved tinkering with projects, always finding satisfaction in fixing something that others thought could not be repaired. His craftsmanship and attention to detail will remain a lasting reminder of the many talents he possessed.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Whether spending a quiet day fishing, watching his favorite old westerns, admiring fast cars, or driving his beloved little red truck, Shorty appreciated the moments that brought peace and happiness. He was happiest when surrounded by family, sharing stories, laughter, and the wisdom he had gained over a lifetime.
Family gatherings were made even more memorable by Shorty’s cooking. Those who knew him will never forget his famous greasy chicken fried steak, a meal that became one of his trademarks. His kitchen was another place where he expressed his love, ensuring no one ever left his table hungry.
Above all else, Shorty loved his family. He took great pride in watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow and knew that his greatest accomplishments were not found in the work he did but in the family he helped build. His steady guidance, dependable nature, quiet humor, and unconditional love created a foundation that will continue for generations.
Edwin is survived by his children, Malcolm Gene Burton, Dennis Wayne Burton Sr. and wife Rhonda, Jerry Lynn Sample and wife Desiree, Edwin Earl Sample Jr. and wife Jennifer, Rickey Don Sample, Craig Allen Sample Sr. and wife Carol Ann, and Lisa Renee Fulcher; his brother, Robert Sample and wife Francis; his sister, Sue Pate; his 19 beloved grandchildren; his 26 cherished great-grandchildren; along with many other loving relatives and a host of dear friends.
Edwin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma Jean Blum Sample; his parents, Reverend John Thomas Sample and Susie Margaret Winkle Sample; his daughter, Monica Justine Sample; his brother, Leon Sample; and his sister, Wanda Parnell.
Shorty’s life was one of faith, perseverance, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His legacy is found not only in the work of his hands but also in the values he instilled, the family he cherished, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness and willingness to help others. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live in every fishing trip, every woodworking project, every old western watched, every classic car admired, and every family meal shared in his honor.
He will be forever loved, fondly remembered, and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graveside service for Edwin Earl Sample Sr. will be on Friday, July 31, 2026, beginning at 11 a.m., at Plum Grove Cemetery 8215 FM 1010, Cleveland, Texas 77327.
