Jackie Marie Johnson Merritt, age 74, passed away on Sept. 4, 2026, in Houston, Texas, following medical complications. She was born on Aug. 3, 1952, in Longview, Texas, and lived a life marked by faith, devotion to family, and a steady commitment to the people and traditions she loved.
Jackie was the beloved wife of Larry Merritt, whom she married on Feb. 2, 1973. Together, they built a life centered on family, hard work, and shared memories that spanned decades. She was a loving mother to her daughters, Stephanie and Angela, and a devoted grandmother who helped raise her grandsons, Samuel and Connor Perez. Jackie’s family also includes her son-in-law, Joseph Hoffman, her sister, Neva Tanner, her brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of dear friends who will remember her warmth and kindness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack Nesbitt Johnson and Wilma Williams Johnson, as well as her daughter, Angela Merritt, and her grandson, Joshua Perez. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life, and she carried her family’s legacy with grace and strength.
Jackie graduated from White Oak High School in 1970, where she was a proud member of the Roughneck Marching Band. She went on to earn an Associate’s degree from Kilgore College and later attended East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. Her education reflected her determination and her belief in the value of learning, qualities that stayed with her throughout her life.
In her community, Jackie was known for her involvement and her willingness to participate wherever she was needed. She was active with the Camp Fire Girls alongside her two daughters, and she was a member of the Gladewater Women’s Association. She also took part in the first Gusher Day’s Play, adding her spirit and energy to a memorable chapter in local history. Jackie’s life was one of service, family, and connection, and she made a lasting impression on those around her.
Jackie’s Christian faith was an important part of her life. She grew up singing in the church choir at Pine Tree Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and her love of music and worship stayed with her for years. Her faith guided her through life’s joys and challenges, and it was reflected in the way she cared for others and welcomed them with kindness.
She also found joy in the simple pleasures that brought her family together. Jackie loved fishing with her family at Lake Harris, and she treasured time spent watching baseball and golf with them. She enjoyed listening to music, playing dominos, and using her creative talents in craft work, including painting and drawing. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she had a special gift for making the season meaningful and memorable for everyone around her. She loved to make the holidays come alive through her crafting skills and her generous spirit.
