Shirley Louise Harrington Burney, 92, of Liberty, Texas, passed away on Sept. 8, 2026.
Shirley was born on Dec. 22, 1933, in Crowley, La., to Mr. and Mrs. Talasmar Harrington. She spent the past 35 years as a resident of Liberty and was formerly a longtime resident of Beaumont.
Shirley was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Liberty and was also a member of the quilt club in Dayton. She was a talented seamstress and gifted with her hands, creating beautiful pieces that her family and friends could treasure. Over the years, she made many quilts and enjoyed crocheting and tatting. Her talents extended to sewing her own clothing, making curtains, and creating clothing for others. She also enjoyed making Victorian Christmas ornaments and prayer blankets, putting great care into everything she created.
Caring for others came naturally to Shirley. She was always looking after the people around her and found fulfillment in helping and providing for those she loved. Whether through something she made with her own hands, lending a helping hand, or simply being there when someone needed her, Shirley showed her love by taking care of others.
Professionally, Shirley worked as an accountant and spent many years working for a credit union in Beaumont. Her attention to detail and dedication served her well throughout her career.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 26 years, V.E. Burney; and her siblings, Clifford Harrington, Wilford Harrington, and Herbert Harrington.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Wendell J. Prejean and wife Gayle Prejean, along with other loving family members and friends.
A visitation for Shirley will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Daisetta, Texas.
Shirley will be remembered for her caring heart, her creativity, and her many talents. She spent her life looking after others and creating beautiful things for the people she loved. The quilts, garments, ornaments, prayer blankets, and other treasures she made will remain lasting reminders of the love and care she so generously gave throughout her life.
