Dayton HS student obtains Scouting’s highest honor

Hunter Alley is the 17th Eagle Scout to come from Dayton's Troop 8 since its founding in 2005.

Troop 8 Scout Hunter Alley passed his Board of Review for Eagle Scout thus obtaining scouting’s highest honor, The Eagle Scout Award, on Jan. 10, 2020. He is the son of Mr. Josh Alley and Mrs. Erica Alley.

Under the leadership and guidance of Scoutmaster Paul D. Newton, Troop 8 sponsored by Eastgate Church of Dayton, Hunter has been a member for seven years and has earned 35 merit badges. As a BSA National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) graduate, he has served his troop over these years as Chaplain Aide, Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and is currently the Troop Instructor. Hunter is an active Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s Honor Society, serving as a Lodge Vice Chief over Ceremonies of Hasinai Lodge.

As a member of Troop 8, Hunter has camped over 75 nights in the outdoors having participated in numerous weekend camp-outs and attending camps at Camp Pirtle in Carthage, Texas, Camp Edgewood in DeQuincy, La., El Rancho Cima in Wimberley, Texas, Sid Richardson Scout Ranch in Decatur, Texas, Lost Pines Scout Reservation in Bastrop, Texas, and Trevor Rees-Jones Scout Camp in Athens, Texas. Hunter continues to be active in Scouting today.

Hunter is currently attending Dayton High School as a 12th grader where he is a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), Dayton Chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), and the Agriculture Advocacy Team. As a member of the Agriculture Advocacy Team, Hunter’s team has twice qualified at the state level. In addition, Hunter is a member of Skills USA focused on automotive maintenance.

For his Eagle Scout community service project, Hunter planned and coordinated the construction of a pergola at “The Crossroads” area in Dayton. Benefiting the City of Dayton Enhancement Committee and spending numerous days and man hours on the project, Hunter managed Troop 8 Scouts as they constructed the pergola. This included cutting the lumber, assembling the structure, laying down the masonry, installing park benches, and staining the entire structure.

Hunter is the 17th Eagle Scout to come from Troop 8 since its founding in 2005. A ceremony honoring Hunter will take place at a future date to be announced where family and friends will be invited to attend.

Sponsored by Eastgate Church of Dayton, Texas, Boy Scout Troop 8 is one of the largest Boy Scout Troops in Liberty County and Trinity District. Being a full uniform, Scout run Troop, BSA Troop 8 holds monthly camping activities and regularly attends summer and winter camps in Texas and/or Louisiana each year.

Troop 8 is the only Scouting unit in Liberty County that has High Adventure activities for older Scouts and standard camping activities for younger Scouts. Troop 8 is for ALL age boys 10 through 18. Troop 8 meets weekly on Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. at Eastgate Church in Dayton and is open to any young man who has completed the fifth grade and is at least 10 years old or is 11 years old, but has not reached age 18.

  1. Congratulations Hunter Alley, what an accomplishment!!! My husband was also an Eagle Scout and a member of The Order of the Arrow. He went on to become a Scout Master and led many young boys as Boy Scouts. At a later date he became a leader for the Assemblies of God, Royal Rangers program. He also accomplished the highest positions in that program with honors. He was successful in training many leaders and boys. He loved the scouting programs and was well accomplished in both.
    Many opportunities await you Hunter. You will do well. Again, Congratulations.
