Excitement builds for Liberty Fire Department’s Station 2; firefighters working on projects for both stations

The anticipation is building for Liberty Fire Department as construction of its second fire station at 119 S. Bowie St. is well underway. Fire Chief Brian Hurst shared that the new fire station is on track to be completed by July 2024, marking a milestone for the department and the community it serves.

Amid the construction buzz, firefighters have been actively involved in preparing for the new station while also enhancing the current Station 1 on Lakeland Drive. One notable project involves the creation of a new dining room table that will soon adorn the halls of Fire Station 2. This impressive table, measuring 5 feet wide by 12 feet long, will seat approximately 14 firefighters at once.

Crafted from planks of white pine, the table will boast an epoxy inlaid area featuring the fire department insignia and other meaningful elements. What adds character to this piece is the use of old fire hydrants as its supports, a nod to the station’s heritage and purpose. A spirited competition among firefighters is underway to determine the design that will adorn the centerpiece of the table.

Beyond the creation of the table, Liberty firefighters on the B Shift have also undertaken the task of painting a mural at the end of a lengthy hallway. This mural is inspired by a defining moment in the department’s history – the intense battle against a major fire at the former Hebert Distributing, Inc., headquarters at 424 US 90 in Liberty. The mural, based on a powerful photograph captured during the fire, is a tribute to the bravery and resilience of the firefighters who braved the fire.

Firefighters on the C Shift recently added a new featured at Fire Station 1. They created a Texas flag crafted entirely from retired firehoses. Their creation stands next to an American flag previously crafted by the A Shift.

Fire Chief Brian Hurst expressed pride for his firefighters’ willingness to perform work that not only keeps the community of Liberty safe, but also enhances the buildings provided by the city.
