ARRL Field Day event in Cleveland promotes ham radio use, education

The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) is set to host a Field Day event on Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23, at the Old City Park, 320 Hubert St., in Cleveland.

This event aims to promote ham radio use and educate the public about the technology and its importance. The ham radio enthusiasts will begin setting up in the park on Saturday morning and will continue operations until around 2 p.m. Sunday.

Field Day offers a unique opportunity for both experienced ham radio operators and newcomers to learn, connect, and engage in various activities centered around radio communications. The event will feature:

Ham Radio Demonstrations: Attendees can witness live demonstrations of ham radio operations, showcasing different techniques and applications of radio communication. These demonstrations will provide insights into how ham radios function and their practical uses.

Licensing Assistance: For those interested in becoming licensed ham radio operators, the event offers on-site testing. Volunteers will be available to help guide participants through the entire process, from studying for the test to completing the necessary paperwork. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to get their license quickly and efficiently.

Educational Sessions: Throughout the weekend, informative sessions will be held to cover a range of topics related to ham radio. These sessions will include the basics of ham radio, the technology behind it, and its critical role in emergency communication.

Additionally, there will be a drawing for a couple of small walkie-talkies, adding an element of excitement to the event.

Bub Melton, N5BUM, a ham radio operator from Cleveland, Texas, emphasized the importance of learning about radio communications.

“Ham radio use is not just a hobby,” Melton said. “It’s crucial for people to understand radios, especially in the event of severe weather and other catastrophes. Ham radios can be a vital means of communication when other systems fail.”
