Dayton firefighters, police respond to fatal house fire

The Dayton Volunteer Fire Department (DVFD), alongside the Dayton Police Department, responded to a fully engulfed structure fire at CR 607 at approximately 9:52 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024.

Despite efforts to enter the home, responders were unable to do so due to intense heat and smoke. After extinguishing the fire, the DVFD discovered human remains inside the residence.

The house was believed to be occupied by Randy Glenn Dejohn, 56, of Dayton, according to family members who also live on the property.

In the effort to control and extinguish the fire, the DVFD received crucial assistance from the 321 Volunteer Fire Department, Kenefick Volunteer Fire Department, Liberty County ESD 3, and The Liberty County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The human remains have been sent to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office for confirmation of identity and determination of the cause of death. Further details will be provided as the investigation continues.
