Firefighter launches donation drive to stock local departments with water, sports drinks and snacks

As summer temperatures climb, a local firefighter and EMT is asking the community to help support the men and women who often spend long hours battling fires and responding to emergencies.

Steven Conner, a volunteer firefighter with the Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department and an EMT with Acadian Ambulance Service, has launched a donation drive to collect bottled water, Gatorade and snacks for fire departments. Conner, who also owns On Da Bottom Fishing in Dayton, hopes the effort will help keep firefighters hydrated and energized during the busy summer months.

To encourage participation, Conner is offering participants a chance to win approximately $500 worth of fishing gear.

The rules are simple. Participants are asked to donate at least two cases of bottled water, one case of Gatorade or a case of snacks to a fire department, or a combination of items. If donors want to provide more than the minimum, that is encouraged. While Conner hopes donations will be made to departments in Liberty County, contributions may be made to any fire department.

After making a donation, participants must take a selfie with the donated items at the fire department. Photos may be taken beside the department’s sign or with a firefighter. Participants must then visit the On Da Bottom Fishing Facebook page and post their photo in the comments section of the contest post to be entered into the drawing.

Contest entries will be accepted through July 1. Conner said he will then begin organizing the entries in preparation for the drawing.

The winner will be announced during a Facebook Live broadcast on the On Da Bottom Fishing Facebook page on July 4.

Conner said the goal is to support firefighters who work in challenging conditions and often rely on donated refreshments while serving their communities.
